They started arriving in the fall, female cardinals with their brown feathers and bright orange beaks eating the seeds of a rotting pumpkin. Then in the early winter snow, bright red birds bringing their young. When Piper the rat passed away, I scattered his leftover seed snacks on the windowsill and the neighborhood birds started flocking to my fire escape! I would play piano facing the window, the Sherman Brothers 'Feed the Birds' each morning as the gentle mourning doves perched on my porch. The repurposed bird feeder which hooked over the rail of my balcony soon became the hot new brunch spot for my feathered friends. The aggressive and territorial cardinals tried to attack the doves, who in turn picked on the three house sparrows who started showing up.
A bag of wild bird seed usually contains millet, sunflower seeds, and cracked corn. Unsalted peanuts make an excellent treat to attract blue jays (and even squirrels). Bird seed can be purchased at most grocery and hardware stores. Bored refers can be easily made, we repurposed an over the door organizer for ours.
The cardinal rule of bird feeding is not to put too much food out!
