The Book Thing, a beloved Baltimore institution that has been seemingly shut down for over a year is back for one Sunday a month! Today was one the rare occasions that the place opens its doors to the public for browsing. I braved the cold and the crowds to wait in line for over an hour to get inside the building in search of rare books and records.
As always, the books and materials are free to everyone and there is no limit to how many one can take. In fact, the volunteers encourage hoarding and being a greedy reader simply because the sheer volume of donations they recieve daily. I always make a beeline straight to the back room to browse the classics. I ended up leaving with pretty green and brown hardcover copies of Balzac's Old Goriot and The Human Comedy, a few pretty old gardening books and The Masquerade by Katherine Thurston.
The fun doesn't end with the books. The Book Thing also gives away movies and music. There were no vinyl records today, but I did find an interesting old cassette tape of steam train sounds to listen to while cleaning the kitchen.
The next event at the Book Thing will take place on Saturday, December 11th 2021 at 3002 Vineyard Lane in Baltimore city! See you there...
