Tree Tracks: Psychedelic 60's Songs About Trees

Last night as we tuned in to the Psyched Out radio show on 90.5 WKHS, I was turned on to some psychedelic 60's songs about trees and bands with tree names. Listen and learn, friends of the forest...

Blue Things - You Can Live in Our Tree
Fresh off the farms of Kansas, folk rock psychedelic band from the late 60's Blue Things brought us this track about sharing a tree with a new hippie roomate.

The Idle Race - Sitting in my Tree
"I often sit alone up in a tree, waving to the ones who wave at me. I think of just how stupid they must be, waving to a man up in a tree..." UK psychedelic darlings the Idle Race tell a tale of a madman living in a tree in the park. Always fun and fancy free with their trippy instrumental effects.

The Matadors - Get Down From the Tree
A little bit of Chekoslovokian freakbeat urging listeners to "Get down from the tree. At once one, two three!" They must have been addressing the lead singer of the Idle Race. Band was named after the Matador electric organ they used.

Trees - Garden of Jane Delaney
A classic folk album with a psychedelic edge from the Trees, a British band active in the late 60's and early 70's. Featuring songs such as Road, She Moved Thru The Fair, and namesake track Garden of Jane Delawney

Traffic - Withering Tree
English rock band Traffic were a prog-rock psychedelic jam band from the late 60's who also added a tree song to the trend. "Withering tree, bearing no fruit, never will see an evergreen suit..."

The Family Tree - Live Your Own Life
A bit of 60's San Fransiscan folk rock was floating around on the airwaves last night. Gone, but not forgotten. Also, check out another band from the same area, Fever Tree with their song San Fransisco Girls.

Peter, Paul and Mary - Lemon Tree
While not strictly psychedelic, this song made it onto the list as it is a 60's classic from folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary. "Lemon tree, very pretty and the lemon flower is sweet. But the fruit of the poor lemon is impossible to eat..." now if only the Lemon Pipers covered this, then it would fit in with the rest of the tree tracks!
